Developed a Behavioral Medicine Service in a 2,000 bed correctional facility for acute and chronic care of federal prisoners. Supervised two to five doctoral students at all times. Designed and provided services in the areas of pain management, stress management, coping with chronic and terminal illness, weight loss, biofeedback, hypnosis, neuropsychological evaluations, hospital consultation/liason, wellness/prevention, and domestic violence. Developed fully staffed interdisciplinary programs in pain management and health promotion/disease prevention. Initiated and developed a hospice unit within the prison, including training of inmate volunteers to care for the terminally ill. Performed forensic evaluations; competency, responsibility, assessment of dangerousness, and presentence evaluations for federal court, as well as evaluations for the parole commission regarding suitability for release, and institutional evaluations regarding suitability for transfer to another facility, competency/responsibility evaluations for administrative disciplinary proceedings, and mental status reports for inmates placed in disciplinary segregation for more than 30 days. Provided individual substance abuse treatment for inmates with less than a year remaining to serve. Acted as consultant to residential drug treatment program and provided interventions in the areas of wellness, neuropsychological evaluations of HIV infected participants, domestic violence, and 12th step work. Developed group intervention for test anxious inmates who were failing GED exam due to high anxiety despite academic proficiency. Active in providing Employee Assistance Program services to staff of 600. Conducted one or two weekly seminars throughout the period of employment to train nonpsychology staff in various topic areas. Provided extended seminars (six to eight hours each topic) to doctoral students in areas of HIV counseling, neuropsychology, and hypnosis. Conducted two or three personnel interviews weekly. Developed training program to prevent sexual exploitation of inmates by staff. Received a Quality Step Increase award, an Official Commendation, two Letters of Commendation, a Letter of Appreciation, and a Special Act award.

Substance Abuse Counselor. Possibilities Unlimited, Incorporated, Lexington, KY. December 1990 – July 1991. Adolescent drug treatment provided in context of therapeutic community.
Domestic Violence Counselor. Forensic Unit, Comprehensive Care Center, Lexington, KY. October 1989 – June 1991; March 1987 – November 1987. Provided group counseling for convicted spouse abusers in a court diversion program. Conducted intake interviews. Also provided individual counseling for battered women. Active with program planning and development, as well as public outreach and education.
Internship. Federal Correctional Center, Lexington, KY. October 1988 – October 1989. Includes year-long rotation at Charter Ridge Hospital, Lexington, KY. Provided general psychological services for a 250 bed living unit within a women’s prison. Duties included crisis counseling, intake screening, psychological evaluations, both brief and ongoing individual therapy, and group therapy. Special services included adoption, abortion, and postpartum counseling for pregnant inmates, as well as HIV/AIDS counseling. Developed group interventions for postpartum loss and grieving among incarcerated mothers, as well as for white collar criminal thinking. Conducted institution-wide work climate survey which culminated in a 20 page report with specific suggestions for change; for this effort received first Special Act award given to an intern by the Bureau of Prisons. Served on fitness, psychology training, and Parent And Children Together advisory committees. Authored 60 page orientation manual for psychology trainees and interns. Participated in two-day Bureau wide plenary session for developing policy on abortion and child placement services for inmates, including development of a proposal for a special halfway house program for inmate mothers and their infants. Performed psychological evaluations directed towards clarification of diagnosis and treatment planning for adolescents and adults while at Charter Ridge Hospital.
Domestic Violence Counselor. YWCA Spouse Abuse Shelter, Lexington, KY. October 1986 – November 1988. Provided individual counseling sessions for abusive men, female victims, and prepubescent/adolescent boys living in homes with domestic violence.
Psychology Trainee. Federal Medical Center, Lexington, KY. July 1987 – September 1988. Provided general psychological services, including initial screenings of new arrivals onto a 180 bed living unit. Made a weekly presentation to approximately 80 new arrivals to the institution on available psychology services, with emphasis on available drug treatment; also administered approximately 20 Beta-II intelligence tests weekly for new arrivals who scored at less than sixth grade level on academic achievement tests. Conducted pre-sentencing studies for federal court.

MEDITATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Shotokan Karate 1970 – 1979. Practiced in dojos in Delaware, Japan, Hawaii, Indiana, and Colorado, most under the direction of Sensei Tsutomu Ohshima.
Ananda Marga 1974 – 1975. Hindu tantra modeled on Pantanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga, under the direction of P.R. Sarkar.
Himalayan Buddhism 1975 to present. Kagyu and Shambhala organizations founded by Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. Over a 40 year period took or taught hundreds of classes on meditation theory and practice including mindfulness, compassion, and tantra. Led hundreds of weekend retreats, as well as dozens of week-long retreats. Completed more than a dozen month-long retreats, several three-month-long retreats, and a six-month-long retreat. Completed the traditional three-year retreat at Gampo Abbey under the direction of the Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche in 2010. Including daily practice sessions, have engaged in over 30,000 hours of meditation. Trained as a meditation instructor in 1982 while attending the Vajradhatu Buddhist Seminary, have given meditation instruction to thousands of individuals.
